As Halloween fast approaches, why not, try something different and spooky?

A cheap activity to get the whole family involved and allow everyone to explore with nature. Spooky Faces utilises the natural materials that are laying around on the ground (remember, in Forest School, we do not pull stuff from the trees or out of the ground as they are still living, and we want to preserve this).

On top of the natural resources found in the great outdoors, you will also need to make salt dough. This is cheap to make and can be messy! The ingredients and quantities are below:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of Flour
  • 1 cup of Salt
  • 1 cup of Water

Method

  1. Mix the flour, salt and water together into a bowl until it becomes a slightly sticky dough.
  2. Once the dough is completed, pop into a small bag and wrap up so air can’t get in, to preserve the moisture.
  3. Grab your coats and wellies and find a great little spot in the woods, local park or nearby tree.

Once, you have found your perfect spot, then unseal the bag and grab a handful of salt dough. Find a perfect spot on the tree and use your hand to press against the tree to make an oval shape or any shape you like. The dough should spring back slightly, but once stuck on the tree, it is ready to decorate. Using natural materials to create your spooky faces, it could be conkers shells for hair, or pinecones for eyes, you make them as scary or as funny as you like.

This activity will support your child’s imaginative skills as well support communication and language when describing their creations. It will allow children to explore natural materials and develop their mathematics skills as they use the materials to resemble shapes / body features. The activity will also support their fine motor skills and allow children to explore areas of woods they may not have experienced.

Let your imagination run wild…
